On Saturday, June 13th at 10 AM we will be heading out with visiting artist Alex Barreto Hathaway and Granite Falls local Nicole Zempel of Wild Roots MN to pick up trash and share stories along the MN River.
During our walk we will be collecting some potential trashy treasures that will be used to create puppets to shed light on some of the environmental concerns our community faces. By sharing these issues, we can share the natural beauty of this area and ways to be better stewards of this land. Let's do this through art, connection, celebration and fun!
All ages are welcome! We will meet at the Yellow Medicine County Historical Society and Museum (MN-23 and 67, Granite Falls, MN 56241).
This is a come & go event so stay as long as you are able!
Trash to Art: Walk, talk & clean up is on Saturday, June 13 from 10 AM – 1 PM
Then join Alex at The YES! House for two puppet making workshops:
• Monday, June 15 | 4 – 7 PM
• Tuesday, June 16 | 1 – 4 PM
This will be the first of two visits that Alex will make to Granite Falls this summer!
He will return for a second time during SquidFest in August, where he will build and feature a giant puppet inspired by what he learns from the community during this June residency.
Artist Bio:
Alex Barreto Hathaway is a theater actor, director, and designer originally from Puerto Rico. He graduated from the U of M with a thesis in Street Theatre researched while in Pernambuco, Brazil. His interests in mask, new work, and clown led him to work with Open Eye, Mixed Precipitation, Exposed Brick, PlaceBase Productions, Sod House, Teatro del Pueblo, Children’s Theatre, and the Guthrie. Barreto Hathaway is a recipient of the Blue Sky Center Vecino-a-Vecino Residency and the ArtsMidwest We The Many Residency—both of which created community productions across the US during the covid pandemic. His film debut in Men Among Men (2020) earned Bill Murray’s Best Comedy Shorts Award at the Twin Cities Film Festival. In 2021 he co-founded the all Latinx improv-sketch comedy group LATINS ON ICE. Offstage Alex teaches in colleges and rural communities in greater Minnesota, California, and Utah. His next project unites tropical cultures in Minnesota to make street theatre.
