Carving Knife Workshop

December 12, 13 and 14

Friday, December 12 | 10 AM – 5 PM

Saturday, December 13 | 8 AM – 5 PM (depending on the day's progress, class may need to run late while we temper blades then glue blades into handles)

Sunday, December 14 | 11 AM – 4 PM

Join woodcarver Joe Hauger for a knife making class at The YES! House.

In this class, students will learn how to turn tool steel into a finished sloyd style carving knife they can take home. Topics covered will include: selecting steel, shaping the blade, hardening, tempering and what's going on inside the metal during these steps; handle styles and wood selection, shaping the handle, setting and securing the handle, options for decorating the handle, sharpening, and ways to make quick sheaths to protect the finished blade.

The final day of the class will be a very basic introduction to spoon carving using our new knives. We will discuss the things like sourcing wood for spoons, spoon types and designs, the best and safest knife strokes for a beginner, and methods to finish, protect, maintain, and care for spoons.

Tools and materials provided, but students are encouraged to bring their own ear muffs, safety glasses, and dust masks. (Instructor will bring some safety gear in case someone forgets.) The instructor suggests students bring a lightweight pair of work gloves to wear while using power sanding belts.

This is an adult knife making class with all experience levels welcome.

$120 registration fee for all three days of class.
